BACK TO THE FUTURE

I have just realised that a lot of my recent posts revolved around the 1960's or simply the days gone by. There's something I find very romantic in the music of 'way back in the day,' everything seemed so much more passionate, raw and full of emotion, like the artists really meant what they were singing. At the same time it all seemed so effortless. Nowadays everybody tries so hard to stand out but what they don't understand is that they may not exist past this generation. The things that I still listen to know have passed the test of time and will probably outlive popular music of today. On the other hand, another reason why i'm so obsessed with the 'old' is my love for hip-hop. Hip-hop music is my window to other music genres. I like playing musical detective and finding where my hip-hop beats get sampled from. It's good to know where you've come from and to appreciate it, especially if something gets sampled that was not popular in its time but within the context of today, it is given a second chance and can be seen in a new light. Hip-hop has led me to appreciate jazz, funk, soul, psychedelic from all over the world.

With that said and done, I know wish to take you to a time closer to ours. I was introduced to this artist by a dear friend of mine and am very grateful for it. Suffering from bi-polar disorder Daniel Johnston is the epitome of raw emotion and every song really just hits you. I advise you to see the documentary of his life called "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".
